In the human body, there are about twenty different types of cells. Each type has a different shape and size to perform various functions. For example, the nerve cells are designed to carry messages; the red blood cells are to carry oxygen around the body.

Cells of the same type are usually arranged in groups or layers to form tissues. Tissues are able to do work at a faster rate. For example, the muscle tissues are in the limbs and walls of certain organs. They are made up of a bundle of muscle cells and contracts to allow body movement. There are also tissues in plants like the photosynthetic tissue. It is the green part of a plant, cells with chlorophyll and makes food for the plant.

Furthermore, different tissues work together to form an organ, which carries out one or more bodily functions. For example, the stomach in an animal is made up of epithelial, muscle and connective tissues and break down food. The leaf of a plant is made up of vascular, photosynthetic, epidermal tissues which are used for food-making. When several organs are linked together, they form a body system which performs a particular function. For example digestive and nervous system in humans and transport system in plants.
