07 Feb Science tuition -Diffusion and Osmosis

Science tuition class in Miracle Learning Centre is fun and enriching. You will learn about the different aspects of Science and how to learn study skills too. If you do not like or understand science, you must definitely attend the science tuition class at Miracle Learning Centre to arouse and reignite your interest. Let us learn about Diffusion in and Osmosis this science tuition lesson.

Cells need to interact with their environment, chemicals, and water. For this, they must be able to move across the cell membrane and across the cell. The process of movement within the cell is known as diffusion. Molecules move across the cell membrane by a related process known as osmosis. By diffusion, the molecules move from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration. Diffusion occurs because of random molecular motion.

Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. Diffusion can take place between matter of the same state or of different states and with or without a partially permeable membrane. Gases normally have the fastest rate of diffusion followed by liquids and then solids. For example, perfume diffuses through the air in all directions or the rust of a rusty can placed on a white tile diffuses gradually or ‘eat into’ the white tile. In addition, there is a link between diffusion and life. Diffusion is used in transporting food, waste and other substances in and out of living cells through the cell membrane.

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane, from a place of higher water concentration to place of lower water concentration. A partially permeable membrane allows only certain substances to pass through it. An example is the cell membrane. Cell membranes do not allow all molecules to cross them. They are known to be selectively permeable. Only a very few molecules can cross the membrane into or out of a cell. As example water can be sighted. Water can cross the membrane while sodium and chlorine ions cannot.
