To know about compounds, we need to start with molecules. Molecules are atoms that are connected by chemical bonds, in other words, every combination of atoms is a molecule. A compound is a molecule made of atoms from different elements. All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds. For example, Hydrogen gas is a molecule, but not a compound because it is made of only one element. Again water can be called a molecule or a compound because it is made of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.

A compound consists of two or more elements chemically combined together. For example, hydrogen and oxygen combined together produce water. Some common compounds include Limestone (CaCO3 ), Sand (SiO2 ) and Carbon dioxide (CO2 ). A compound is formed by a chemical reaction with heat or light taken in or given out and it can only be broken down into simpler substances by chemical methods such as heating or by passing electricity. The different elements in a compound are joined together in a fixed proportion by mass and a compound has properties that are different from the properties of its constituent elements.

Compounds are formed from the chemical combination of elements, compounds or both. It can be a combination of two elements, for example, burning carbon in oxygen produces carbon dioxide. It can also be a combination of an element and a compound like heating colorless nitrogen oxide gas with oxygen produces brown fume of nitrogen dioxide. Combination of two compounds is also possible like the reaction of ammonia gas with gaseous hydrogen chloride produces white fume of ammonium chloride.
