A mixture consists of two or more substances which are not joined together chemically. Mixtures can be made up of elements, compounds or both and may be solids, liquids or gases. For example air is made up of gaseous elements and compounds, alloy is made up of solid elements and soil is made up of solid elements and compounds.
Mixtures can be either homogenous or heterogeneous. A homogenous mixture is a type of mixture in which the composition is uniform and every part of the solution has the same properties. An example can be alcohol in water. A heterogeneous mixture is simply any mixture which is not uniform in composition. An example can be sighted as soil which is a mixture of several elements but is not uniform, No chemical reaction will take place during the formation of a mixture and the mixture will possess the properties of the substances that make up the mixture. For example, air can be prepared by mixing its components together and it will have the properties of oxygen which support combustion and also have the properties of carbon dioxide which turns limewater milky. In addition, the substances in a mixture can be mixed in any proportion and can be separated into its components by physical means such as evaporation, filtration and distillation. For example, the percentage of each gas in air is not constant and it changes with time and place. Furthermore, the components in the air can also be separated by fractional distillation of liquid air.
