The body fluid present in humans and other animals which delivers nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from the cells is called blood.
Blood is a mixture of red blood cells, white blood cells & platelets suspended in a yellow liquid called plasma. Firstly, red blood cells contain haemoglobin that is produced by the bone marrow and carries oxygen. If this component is missing, there will not be any cells that can carry fresh oxygen throughout the body.
Secondly, there are two types of white blood cells, namely Lymphocyte that produces antibodies which engulf bacteria and viruses and Phagocyte that engulf germs. The function of the white blood cells is to recognize and identify bodies, engulf these foreign bodies, produce antibodies and fight infections. However, if there are no white blood cells in the body, the body will not be able to resist and fight diseases causing the immune system to weaken.
Thirdly, platelets help in the clotting of blood. If this is missing, there will be continuous bleeding and germs will enter into the blood stream. Lastly, plasma is the liquid part of the blood which contains mainly water. It transports food substances, waste products, hormones and other substances throughout the body. If this component is missing, cells are unable to obtain useful substances and get rid of waste rapidly.
