Let us learn about the life cycle of a flowering plant in this science tuition lesson.

Plants reproduce to ensure that their species will continue. Plants which grow from seeds will go through several stages of development in its life cycle. The different stages are seed, seedling and the adult plant.

Firstly, we start with the seed. A seed contains an embryo which can grow into a new plant. The embryo has a tiny root and shoot. It is found inside the seed leaf. The seed leaf provides food for the young plant until its leaves grow. The seed is protected by a seed coat. Seeds can only germinate (grow) if there is warmth, moisture and air. Seeds do not need sunlight to grow. Once the conditions for germination are right, the roots will grow first. The roots help to anchor the new plant firmly to the ground. They also take in water and mineral salts for the plant. The roots will always grow downwards. The shoots will grow next. Shoots always grow upwards towards the sunlight so that the leaves can make food for the plant.

Secondly, we explain about the seedling. Before it has leaves, a young seedling obtains its food from the seed leaves. As the seedling grows, the food in the seed leaves is slowly being used up. The seed leaves shrivel up and will eventually drop off. Leaves start to grow, and the seedling is now able to make its own food. Sunlight, air, water and mineral salts are required for the seedling to continue growing at this stage.

Thirdly, we have the adult plant. As the plant matures, more leaves and roots grow. Buds will start to appear and grow into flowers. After the flowers are fertilized, they will grow into fruits. The fruits contain seeds, which can grow into a new plant, and the life cycle repeats itself. Fertilizers may be added to the soil to help the plant to grow better at any stage of the life cycle. Examples of plants that grow from seeds are the string bean plant, sunflower, chilli and tomato plants.
