Hello and welcome back to your favorite Science Tuition. We are glad to feed you with new information and knowledge each day. Hope you are enjoying as well as learning with us.

So continuing with our topic on the famous chemists, in this Science Tuition lesson we are doing our investigation on Dorothy Mary Crowfoot.

She was a British chemist who was born on 12 May 1910. She is renowned in chemistry as she is the one who developed protein crystallography, for which she also won the Nobel Prize. She is also regarded as a pioneer in the field of X-ray crystallography studies as she elucidated the structures of biomolecules.
Her notable discovery was the three-dimensional structure of the biomolecules. She also discovered and illustrated the structures of steroid, penicillin, vitamin B12 and insulin.

Dorothy Hodgkin developed chronic rheumatic arthritis at the age of 28 following an infection after the birth of her first child. This made her hands swollen and distorted but that could not stop her to continue to carry out the delicate manipulations necessary to mount and photograph the tiny crystals, smaller than a grain of salt, which she used in her studies.

The Somerville College in Oxford gave her a research fellowship in 1933. She was the first fellow and tutor in Chemistry at Somerville and during her service period, she tutored the late Prime Minister of England Margaret Thatcher. During the Second World War, penicillin was high in demand and Hodgkin started studying penicillin hydrochloride. Together with Charles Bunn in 1949, she published the three-dimensional biomolecular structure,

It took her six years to complete her research and discovery of the molecular structure of vitamin B12 which she began in 1948 and concluded in 1954. It took this much of time because of the large molecular weight. In 1964 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry because of this research.
