06 Jun PSLE Maths Model Drawing Method Step-by-Step Guide for P5 and P6
Solve Any Word Problem With One Method
Your child reads the word problem. Then reads it again. Nothing clicks. This is the moment the PSLE maths model drawing method changes everything and it is the first skill our tutors at Miracle Learning Centre teach every P5 and P6 student who walks through our door.
If your child is still guessing their way through word problems, this guide is for you.
What Is the PSLE Maths Model Drawing Method?
The bar model method for PSLE maths is a visual heuristic part of Singapore's official MOE Mathematics syllabus where students draw labelled rectangular bars to represent known and unknown quantities in a word problem. It is one of the most powerful primary maths heuristics in Singapore because it turns confusing language into a clear picture before any calculation begins.
Rather than jumping to equations, students:
- Read the problem carefully
- Identify what is known and unknown
- Draw bars to show the relationship
- Label every part
- Write the number sentence and solve
This p6 maths word problem technique works across all question types fractions, ratios, comparisons, and before-and-after problems and is the method PSLE markers are trained to reward with working marks.
Worked Example 1 Comparison Model (P5)
Question: Ali has 3 times as many marbles as Bala. Together they have 120 marbles. How many marbles does Bala have?
Bar Model:
| Bala |
|---|
| 1u |
| Ali | ||
|---|---|---|
| 1u | 1u | 1u |
Total = 4 units = 120
Working: 4 units = 120 1 unit = 120 ÷ 4 = 30 marbles
Bala has 30 marbles. (Check: Ali = 90, 90 + 30 = 120 ?)
Worked Example 2 Fraction Model (P6)
Question: ? of the students in a class are boys. There are 18 girls. How many students are there altogether?
Bar Model:
| Boys (2 units) | ||
|---|---|---|
| 1u | 1u | |
| Girls (3 units) | ||
|---|---|---|
| 1u | 1u | 1u |
3u = 18
Working: 3 units = 18 1 unit = 18 ÷ 3 = 6 Total = 5 units = 5 × 6 = 30 students
This is the model drawing method for P5 and P6 in Singapore at its most efficient one diagram, five clear steps, a verified answer.
How Miracle Learning Centre Helps Your Child Master This
At Miracle Learning Centre a trusted tuition centre in Singapore with 18 years of experience, 2,200+ testimonials, and a 5.0 Google rating model drawing is not a one-off lesson. It is woven into every P5 and P6 session.
Here is what makes our maths tuition different:
- MOE-Registered Tutors. Many of our tutors are former MOE school teachers who know exactly how PSLE markers read a model. They teach students to draw and label models the way that earns marks including working marks when the final answer is wrong.
- Small Classes of 4–8 Students. Our tutors check every model drawn in class. Errors are corrected in real time, not days later when a wrong habit has already set in.
- Customised Worksheets. We build difficulty progressively from basic Part-Whole models at P5 to multi-concept Before-and-After fraction problems at P6 — matching the actual PSLE question progression.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is model drawing compulsory for PSLE?
Not explicitly but PSLE word problems are designed around this heuristic. PSLE markers award working marks for correct models even when the final answer is wrong. Skipping the model costs marks.
When should my child start learning model drawing?
It is introduced at P3, but mastery matters most from P5 onwards. The earlier the habit is built, the easier PSLE preparation becomes.
Can a tuition centre in Singapore really help with model drawing?
Yes because real-time correction is the key. In a class of 30, a teacher cannot check every diagram. In our small-group maths tuition classes, your child's model is reviewed every single session.
