11 Mar The Smart Way To Understand And Tackle Infectious Diseases
Do you remember how in the last season, suddenly one day half the class was absent, and parents later reported that the children were down with the flu?
We took no time to exercise preventive measures and asked you all to be very careful about the spread. However, by the next week, things turned normal, as even your sick friends recovered with the right help and treatment.
Why did we refer to the incident? Because, of course, flu is a highly infectious disease that spreads fast through touch, respiratory droplets and even the air.
For students in Singapore, understanding the flu or other contagious diseases isn’t about general knowledge but science. It’s covered under the topic, ‘Human Infections and Health’ in lower secondary science classes. Hence, you need to understand the subject to answer exam questions confidently as well as apply the knowledge in your life to stay safe.
Our science tuition classes at the Miracle Learning Centre aims to make the concepts clearer before students attempt questions in the exams.
What Are Infectious Diseases?
In the simplest terms, infectious diseases are caused by microorganisms, like bacteria, fungi, viruses and other parasites. These enter the body, multiply and disrupt normal functions, thus resulting in fever and other severe complications.
These complications are also referred to as communicable diseases when they spread from one person to another through touch, respiratory droplets or pathogens. For example, influenza (flu), dengue, chickenpox, and COVID-19. In your MOE Science syllabus, you will study:
- Pathogens - The harmful microorganisms that cause these illnesses
- Host response - How our immune system reacts to the invasion of these pathogens
- Preventive methods - Vaccination and hygiene practices for prevention of illness
Once a student understands how it works both inside and outside the body, answering tricky questions becomes a cake walk.
How Infectious Diseases Get Transmitted?
Most contagious diseases spread through contact (as the name implies). Now this ‘contact’ can be physical, like close interactions, handshakes, sharing stuff like utensils, clothes, etc. and touching contaminated objects.
However, the contact may also happen indirectly. For example, using a shared keyboard, phone, or door handle may transfer pathogens if proper hygiene is not practised. When you understand how contact works, you’ll recognise why simple habits such as handwashing and avoiding sharing personal items are effective in reducing the spread of illness.
There are other ways for these diseases to get transmitted:
Airborne transmission
Some disease-causing agents get transmitted through air. Like we saw at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. When an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or even breathes, harmful microorganisms get released into the air. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, these particles may remain suspended for long periods. When another person inhales them, they enter his/her respiratory system.
Contaminated Surfaces
As mentioned before, pathogens can live on certain surfaces, like door handles, tables, keyboards, utensils, and shared clothes and stationery items for long periods. When someone touches such an object and then touches their face, these microorganisms can enter the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth. That’s why we should always maintain basic hygiene, especially in shared spaces.
Through Vectors
When another living carrier transmits the pathogens from an infected person to a healthy one, they are known as vectors. A common example in Singapore is the mosquito, which can carry pathogens that cause dengue. When a mosquito bites an infected person, it becomes a carrier of the pathogen. It can then easily pass the microorganisms to another person through a subsequent bite.
How To Prevent Contagious Diseases From Spreading?
Stopping human infections from disease-causing pathogens permanently is not feasible. We coexist with these pathogens, and sometimes, even infections are normal. But we must also take the necessary measures to prevent complexities that can even be fatal.
The key is to understand why certain habits work, so you can practise them daily, whether in school, at home, or outdoors.
- Hand hygiene - Washing hands with soap for at least twenty seconds removes microorganisms picked up from surfaces. This is especially important before eating and after using the toilet.
- Respiratory etiquette - Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing reduces the release of infectious droplets into the air.
- Vaccination - Vaccines train the immune system to recognise and respond quickly to specific pathogens. This reduces the severity of illness and lowers transmission within the community.
- Avoid sharing items - Personal items such as water bottles, utensils, and towels can carry pathogens. Keeping them separate limits cross infection.
- Environmental cleanliness - Regular cleaning and sanitization of frequently touched surfaces decreases the chance of indirect transmission.
When Your Science Tuition Trains You In Infectious Diseases
Especially the Secondary Science students in Singapore should keep this in mind -
Human Infections and pathogens is not just a chapter in your textbook. They explain real situations that affect schools, families, and the wider community.
When you understand
- How illnesses spread,
- How the immune system responds, and
- Why preventive measures work,
You gain both academic confidence and practical knowledge that you can use in your life.
And our science tuition sessions aim to achieve exactly that.
At Miracle Learning Centre, we help students understand textbook concepts in a real world perspective. Our lessons are aligned with the current MOE syllabus, and we focus on answering techniques, structured explanations, and higher order thinking skills.
If your child wants to strengthen their understanding of infectious diseases and other key Science topics, we would be happy to support their learning journey.
Because a strong foundation today leads to stronger results tomorrow.
