01 Feb Group I elements in the periodic table
Chemistry tuition classes in Miracle Learning Centre is easy to understand and help you in the chemistry tuition application questions. If you do not understand chemistry in school, you must definitely come for chemistry tuition classes at Miracle Learning Centre. Let us learn about the group 1 elements in the periodic table in this chemistry tuition lesson.
We will learn about the properties of the group I elements in the periodic table. Group I elements consists of alkali metals. They are soft metals and can be cut with a knife. They are known as alkaline metals. They have low melting points and boiling points. Hence it is easy to identify them. They also have low density. They react with water to form a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas. For example lithium reacts with water to form lithium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. Sodium reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. Group I elements have the same number of valence electrons and hence possess similar chemical properties. All group I elements react with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen with increasing speed down the group. Group I metals form ionic compounds with non metals. For example lithium will form lithium chloride and sodium will form sodium chloride. Group I metals reactivity increases down the group because it is easier to lose the electron as the size of the atom increases. The melting point and boiling point of the group I metals decreases down the group as the metallic bonding becomes weaker.
The student at Miracle Learning Centre asks, “Why do we need to learn about group I elements?” Mrs Lew, chemistry teacher at Miracle Learning Centre replied, “By knowing the properties of the group I metals, we are able to identify which substance is a group I metal and the reactions it can undergo. We also learn how to store group I metals from their properties. As group I metals are very reactive, we have to store them under oil or in nitrogen gas. This is to prevent them from coming in contact with oxygen. When group I metal comes into contact with oxygen in the air, they will react immediately and violently in some cases to form metal hydroxide.”
Miracle Learning Centre aims to educate students about group I elements in the periodic table. Do come to Miracle Learning Centre for more chemistry tuition lessons to learn more about group I elements in the periodic table.
