29 Apr Reactions of Alkali
Chemistry tuition classes in Miracle Learning Centre is very useful. If you do not understand chemistry, you must definitely attend the chemistry tuition class at Miracle Learning Centre. Let us learn about alkali reactions in this chemistry tuition lesson.
Alkali Reactions Explained
Your chemistry tuition teacher at Miracle Learning Centre will teach you that alkali react with acid to form salt and water. This alkali reactions is called neutralisation.
The other reaction of an alkali is that alkali + ammonium salt reacts to form salt, ammonia gas and water. For example, ammonium chloride reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium chloride, ammonia gas and water.
This is one of the methods to produce ammonia gas in the laboratory. To test for ammonia gas, use a moist red litmus paper. If ammonia is present, the litmus paper will turn blue.
Why Can’t Ammonium Nitrate and Calcium Oxide Be Added at the Same Time?
The student at Miracle Learning Centre asked,
” Why farmers cannot add ammonium nitrate and calcium oxide to the soil at the same time ? “
Teacher’s Explanation on Fertilizers
The chemistry tuition teacher at Miracle Learning Centre replied, “Ammonium nitrate is added to the soil as a fertilizer for plants.
The plants need to absorb the nitrogen content for growth. Calcium oxide is added to neutralise acidic soil. However, if they are added at the same time, ammonia gas will be produced and escapes into the air.
If this happens, the plant will not be able to absorb the nitrogen for growth. So how do we solve this problem? The solution is to add ammonium nitrate, which contains ammonium salt and alkali, alone.
After a few days, then calcium oxide is added. In this way, ammonia will not be released into the air.”
