Changes in States

Chemistry is a very interesting subject. It deals with a lot of things that we see around our surrounding including changes in states and it has a lot of scopes and professions to offer. But it has a lot of critical topics within it. Students will not be able to understand these topics without extensive guidance and care good marks.

Keeping that in mind Miracle Learning Centre has introduced a level chemistry tuition, o level chemistry tuition and jc chemistry tuition for the students of Singapore.

Our classes are filled with fun games and activities which help students to learn better. Chemistry tuition class in Miracle Learning Centre is fun and enriching.

You will learn about the different aspects of Science and how to learn study skills too. If you do not like or understand science, you must definitely attend the chemistry tuition class at Miracle Learning Centre to arouse and reignite your interest.

Let us learn about the Changes in States in this science tuition lesson.

Changes in States of Matter

Almost every substance can exist as a solid, a liquid, or a gas. These are the three common states of matter. Whether a substance is in solid, liquid or gaseous state it depends on its temperature and the pressure placed on it.

There are different methods where the states can be changed. Some of the examples of changes in states are —

  • melting
  • condensation and
  • sublimation

Melting (Solid → Liquid)

Melting is when a solid is heated, the particles gain energy and vibrate faster and faster. Eventually, the particles are able to overcome the attractive forces that hold them together in their fixed positions and particles are free to move about in the liquid state.

📌 Example: Ice melting into water at 0°C.

Condensation (Gas → Liquid)

Condensation is when a gas is cooled; the particles move slower and the mutual attractive forces become stronger. Eventually, the particles are arranged closely together but able to move about in the liquid.

📌 Example: Water droplets forming on a cold glass of water.

Sublimation (Solid → Gas Without Becoming Liquid)

Sublimation is a process of changing from a solid to a gaseous state without melting. When a solid sublimates, it converts directly to a gas without first becoming a liquid. This occurs when the temperature and pressure are just right, and the forces that keep the solid together are weak enough to allow particles to escape.

📌 Examples:

Iodine crystals turning into violet iodine gas upon heating.
Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimating at room temperature.
