Chemistry Tuition – Oxidation

01 Feb Chemistry Tuition – Oxidation

Chemistry tuition classes in Miracle Learning Centre are easy to understand and help you in the chemistry tuition application questions. If you do not understand chemistry in school, you must definitely come for chemistry tuition classes at Miracle Learning Centre. Let us learn about oxidation in this chemistry tuition lesson.

Oxidation can be described as the process of gaining oxygen. For example when carbon gains oxygen, it becomes carbon dioxide. This is an example of oxidation. Another way of defining oxidation is loss of hydrogen. When a substance loses hydrogen, it has undergone oxidation. The third way of describing oxidation is in terms of oxidation state. For example, when magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid, it produces magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. The oxidation state of magnesium increases from 0 in magnesium to +2 in magnesium chloride. There is an increase of oxidation state from 0 to +2. Hence, we say that magnesium has been oxidised in this reaction. Oxidation can also be explained in terms of electrons. In the reaction of magnesium reacting with hydrochloric acid, magnesium loses 2 electrons to form magnesium ion. By losing 2 electrons, magnesium has been oxidised. Oxidation can also be described as loss of electrons. Hence, we learn that oxidation can be described in terms of either gain of oxygen, loss of hydrogen, increase in oxidation state or loss of electrons.

The student at Miracle Learning Centre asked, “Why do we need to learn about oxidation?” Mrs Lew, chemistry teacher at Miracle Learning Centre replied, “There are many reactions in our daily life that involves oxidation. The most common reaction involving oxidation is rusting. When we have iron exposed to air, it rust. Why? Iron reacts with oxygen and water in the air and is oxidised. Hence, rust is produced. Iron has been oxidised to become iron(III) . Another common example of oxidation is burning. When a substance burns in air, it is oxidised. For example, carbon burns in oxygen to form carbon dioxide. Hence, carbon has been oxidised. We know from Science that rusting of iron is a scientific reaction. It is not a superstition as what older people believes in ancient times.”
