Chemistry tuition class in Miracle Learning Centre is fun and enriching. You will learn about the different aspects of Science and how to learn study skills too. If you do not like or understand science, you must definitely attend the chemistry tuition class at Miracle Learning Centre to arouse and reignite your interest. Let us learn about the Molecules and Compounds in this science tuition lesson.
What Are Molecules and Compounds?
To know about compounds, we need to start with molecules. Molecules are atoms that are connected by chemical bonds, in other words, every combination of atoms is a molecule. A compound is a molecule made of atoms from different elements. All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds.
- For example, Hydrogen gas is a molecule, but not a compound because it is made of only one element.
- Again water can be called a molecule or a compound because it is made of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
What Is an Example of a Compound?
A compound consists of two or more elements chemically combined together. For example, hydrogen and oxygen combined together produce water. Some common compounds include
- Limestone (CaCO3 ): Used in construction and agriculture.
- Sand (SiO2 ): A key ingredient in making glass.
- Sodium Chloride (NaCl): Commonly known as table salt.
- Ammonia (NH₃): Found in household cleaners.
Difference Between Molecule and Compound
It’s important to know the difference between molecules and compounds in chemistry. Here’s an easy explanation:
A molecule is made up of two or more atoms that are bonded together. These atoms can be from the same element or different elements.
- Example: Oxygen gas (O₂) is a molecule, but it’s not a compound.A compound is a type of molecule where atoms from different elements are chemically bonded together in a specific ratio.
- Example: Water (H₂O) is both a molecule and a compound because it’s made of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
Breaking Down Compounds
Electrolysis: A compound is formed by a chemical reaction with heat or light taken in or given out and it can only be broken down into simpler substances by chemical methods such as heating or by passing electricity.
Thermal Decomposition: The different elements in a compound are joined together in a fixed proportion by mass and a compound has properties that are different from the properties of its constituent elements.
How Are Compounds Formed?
Compounds are formed from the chemical combination of elements, compounds or both. It can be a combination of two elements, for example, burning carbon in oxygen produces carbon dioxide.
It can also be a combination of an element and a compound like heating colorless nitrogen oxide gas with oxygen produces brown fume of nitrogen dioxide.
Combination of two compounds is also possible like the reaction of ammonia gas with gaseous hydrogen chloride produces white fume of ammonium chloride.
