A chemical substance or mixture of substances that constitute an object is known as material. Material is a substance that is used for making objects. Materials can be pure or impure, living or non-living matter. Materials can be classified on their physical and chemical properties, or based on their geological origin or biological function. Some materials occur naturally such as metals while others such as plastics are man-made. Materials can be classified into two groups: Metals or Non-Metals. Metals usually have the characteristics of shiny, ductile, malleable and conduct heat and electricity. Non-Metals, on the other hand, can be further classified into four groups namely ceramics, plastics, fibers and glass.

Ceramics are made from clay, hard when dry and do not rust. They also have a high melting point and do not conduct electricity. Plastics are very light and can easily be mold. They do not conduct electricity and rust. Fibers can be spun into threads, woven into fabrics and can absorb dye. Glass is transparent and is easily broken. They are also poor electrical and heat conductor.
