Metal, it’s Characteristics, and Properties

Hi, and welcome back to chemistry tuition. We hope you have been practicing your previous chemistry lessons. Today we are back again with an intriguing topic.

We all know what metals are, well, metals are described according to their characteristics and properties. And as we know that about 90 of the 118 elements in the periodic table are metals, therefore, it is important to understand the major characteristics and the properties of metals. So if we are denoting an element as a metal, we are looking for the qualities such as-
Metals are basically (a) Good electrical and heat conductors, (b) They are opaque as thin sheet, (c) They are ductile, which means they can be stretched into wire, (d) They possess metallic lustre, (e) They are solid at room temperature, (f) they are strong but malleable which means they can be hammered, bent and shaped into anything without even cracking. So these are the basic characteristics and properties which distinguish between a metal and a non-metal element.

Some interesting facts about aluminium. 8% of Earth’s outer crust (by weight) is made of aluminum.

A block of aluminum weighs one third as much as a block of steel the same size.
Aluminum foil is typically less than 0.15 mm (0.0060 in.) thick.

Pure aluminum reacts rapidly with air to form a rustproof protective layer of aluminum oxide.

Many cooking pots, pans, and tools are made of aluminum.

If you want to turn bauxite into aluminum to make useful things like cans, cooking foil, and space rockets, you have to get rid of the impurities and the water and split the aluminum atoms from the oxygen atoms. So making aluminum is actually a multi-stage process.

I hope you enjoyed as well as learned from this chemistry tuition. We will be back soon, till then keep practicing and loving chemistry.

Since the beginning of time, students have complained about Chemistry that this subject is extremely boring, bland and underwhelming. Well if you meet the students of Miracle Learning Centre, they will not agree with you on this. In our innovative classes, students are taught in such a way that the lessons will never be boring. We always try to implement new things and techniques which make our lessons exciting and enriching. Students who always hated Chemistry have become very curious about learning new things. Many students have been able to increase their falling grades in this way.
