Pink Lake is a salt lake located in the region of Goldfields-Esperance in Western Australia. It is a very big lake with a surface area of 99 hectare or equivalent to 245 acres. It is also long and wide with a maximum length of 4km (2 miles) and a maximum width of 2km (1 mile).

How does Pink Lake get its color? The lake is not always pink. However, the distinctive change in the lake’s color comes from a dye created by the bacteria that live in the salt crusts. It is a result of a green alga called Dunaliella salina, halobacterium Halobacteria cutirubrum and even sometimes it caused by a high concentration of brine prawn.

When the lake water reaches a certain salinity level that is greater than that of seawater, along with temperature that is high enough as well as adequate light conditions, the alga will begin to accumulate a red pigment called beta carotene. The pink halobacterium will grow in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake, and therefore the lake will start to become pink as a result of the balance between D. salina and H. cutirubrum.

Another fact about the Pink Lake is that it is identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.
