Greetings and welcome back to Science Tuition. There are so many things in the chemistry world of which we are unaware of, and so many chemists about whose inventions and discoveries we do not know yet.

So in this Science Tuition lesson, we continue to gain our knowledge on our famous chemists. Today we will study about George Washington Carver.

Born in the 1860s, George was an American agricultural chemist. He worked on improving the lives of the farmers, and he developed methods to upgrade and enhance the quality of the soil. He also discovered industrial uses for crop plants such as sweet potatoes, peanuts, and soybeans. His works gave the idea for the crop rotation. Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism and received numerous honors for the same.

Here are some unknown facts about him –
He was known as the young “plant doctor”.

Even as a child, Carver was interested in nature. Spared from demanding work because of his poor health, he had the time which he utilized to study plants. Words about his talents started to reach the people and people started to ask his help for their ailing vegetation.

He believed that peanuts could fight polio. Carver felt that peanuts or rather peanut oil could help these people regain some lost function. In 1930s Carver began treating patients with peanut oil massages and it got positive results.

Mahatma Gandhi asked Carver for advice about how Gandhi could build strength in between hunger strikes.

Carver cared about people, not about money. He turned down a six-figure job offer from Thomas Edison. He also never spent much on clothes and was always shabbily dressed. Carver filed only three patents on the product he had developed and he said that he did not want any discoveries to benefit specific favored persons.

He was an inspiration to many, and one of his famous quotes is “When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.”
