Science Tuition on John Dalton

Continuing with our previous topics on famous chemists, this Science Tuition lesson is focused on John Delton.

He was born on 6th December 1776. He is a renowned English chemist, physicist, and meteorologist. He is known in the chemistry world for introducing the atomic theory into chemistry, and he also did his research into color blindness which is at times referred to as Daltonism.

Dalton is considered to be the father of modern atomic theory. In his atomic theory, he was successful at identifying the chemical compounds and reactions which affect the interaction of atoms with one another. At first, he suggested the existence of atoms in his theory and later elaborated on this work by publishing his article “A new system of chemical philosophy.”

Let us take a look at some unknown facts about Charles Dalton –

John Dalton was a Quaker. Quakers were Christians who among other things believed in the priesthood of all believers and dissented from the established Church of England.

He started teaching at a local school when he was twelve!! Can you imagine this? John’s elder brother Jonathan Dalton was passed over the Jon Fletcher’s Quaker grammar school and at the age of twelve, John started assisting him by teaching in that school.

John Dalton was the first ever Scientist to publish a paper on color blindness. In his paper, he described the defect he had discovered in his own and his brother’s vision.

He is probably the only Scientist who got a statue in his lifetime. Scientist during that time was honored with a status much after their death, but Francis Leggatt Chantrey who was a leading English sculptor crafted a large status of Dalton which was erected when Dalton was still alive, That is all on Science Tuition lessons for today.
