Let us learn about water transport in plants in this science tuition lesson.
Have it came to your mind that how plants eat and drink? Or did you think that they don’t need to feed on anything? How does anything transport in plants? How does a plant survive? Well yes, plants also drink and eat just like us, read on to know more.
Transportation in plants is necessary to circulate water, essential nutrients, excretory products, and gases within the plants for various purposes. The transportation in plant takes place in vascular tissues. By a suctions force, water and minerals are transported to the various parts of the plants. Vascular tissues are normally conducting tissues which can be formed by xylem and phloem of a plant.
Diffusion is the net movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. The rate of diffusion will be faster if the difference in concentration is greater. In other words, molecules diffuse down a concentration gradient from high to low concentration regions. Diffusion stop when the two regions are homogenous or of the same concentration. Diffusion can occur in plants. Photosynthesis in a leaf cell produces oxygen inside the cell. The concentration of oxygen becomes higher inside the cell than outside. Oxygen then moves out of the cell by diffusion.
The transport system in flowering plants can be from two networks namely xylem and phloem. Xylem transports water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the leaves via the stem while phloem carries the sugar produced in the leaves to all other parts of the plants, sugar is transported in the form of sucrose.
