Element is the simplest kind of matter. All matter consists of elements and an element is a substance which cannot be split into two or more simpler substances by chemical methods. The most abundant element in the Earth’s crust is oxygen.

Elements are classified systematically according to their properties in a form of a table called Periodic table and each element is represented by a symbol of one or two letters and has a different number called atomic number. The vertical column of the Periodic Table is called Group and elements in the same group have similar chemical properties. For example, Hydrogen, Lithium, Sodium and Potassium are in Group I. The horizontal row of the Periodic Table is called Period and chemical properties of the elements change gradually across a period from the left to the right of the Periodic Table. For example, Lithium, Beryllium, and Boron are in Period 2.

Elements to the left of the zigzag line in the Periodic Table are metals while those to the right of the line are non-metals. Some common properties of metals are that most metals have high melting points, high density and are solids at room temperature. On the other hand, non-metals have low melting points, low density and can be solids, liquids or gases at room temperature.
