Uses of a Plane Mirror

Physics tuition classes in Miracle Learning Centre is easy to understand and help you to improve in your grades. If you do not understand physics, you must definitely attend the physics tuition class at Miracle Learning Centre. Let us learn about the uses and properties of a plane mirror in this physics tuition lesson.

A luminous body is a source of light. It emits light on its own. Example: Sun, stars, candle flame. A non-luminous body does not emit any light of its own and therefore becomes visible only after our eye perceives incident light reflected from another source. Ex: chair, umbrella, hair.

An good absorber absorbs most of the incident light falling on it, but reflects none or very little of it. Example: A black cloth. An poor absorber absorbs little of the incident light falling on it. Example: A light blue cloth. A good emitter reflects most of the incident light falling on it. Example: a silvery surface.

A reflecting body absorbs very little incident light falling on it, but reflects almost all of it. Example: Moon, mirror.

The student at Miracle Learning Centre asked, “What are the properties of the image formed by a plane mirror? “

The physics tuition teacher at Miracle Learning Centre replied,” The image of an object in front of the plane mirror is formed behind the mirror. For a plane mirror, angles of incidence and reflection are equal. The distance and the size of the image behind the mirror for the object in front of it are equal. The image behind the mirror is laterally inverted, upright and virtual.”

A periscope is a device used in ships and submarines to bring into view objects hidden from normal line of view. It is made up of two parallel, but separated by a distance mirrors. Since they both are inclined at 45 degrees to the incident light and therefore reflect the light twice such that the incident rays and reflected rays in both cases are perpendicular. This makes the objects above the sea visible to people moving in submarines below it.
