Elements are separated into metals and non-metals. Metals burn in oxygen to form metallic oxides. Non-metals burn in oxygen to form non-metallic oxides. Metallic oxides form basic and amphoteric oxides. Basic oxides reacts with acid to form salt and water. Amphoteric oxides reacts with acid and alkaline to form salt and water. Non-metal oxides include acidic and neutral oxides. Acidic oxides react with alkaline or bases to form salt and water. Neutral oxides do not react with acid and alkali.
Michelle, a student at Miracle Learning Centre asked, “Why do we need to learn about oxides?”
Mrs Lew, chemistry teacher at Miracle Learning Centre replied, “The knowledge of oxides are necessary because it tells us the reaction of the various metallic oxides and non-metallic oxides. For example, carbon dioxide is an acidic oxide. It reacts with sodium hydroxide which is an alkali, to form salt and water. Hence, carbon dioxide is removed when it pass through sodium hydroxide. Zinc oxide is an amphoteric oxide. Zinc oxide reacts with acid to form salt and water. Zinc oxide will also react with alkali to form salt and water. Hence, if we are trying to identify an oxide that reacts with both acid and alkaline, we need to choose and amphoteric oxide. There are 3 amphoteric oxides, mainly, zinc oxide, lead oxide and aluminium oxide. The various acidic oxides are sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide. Hence by knowing the properties of the oxide, we can tell the reactions that it undergo and the reactions that it cannot undergo.”
